Ch 1 - Introduction to Information Systems
1.1 Why Study Information Systems?
We live in a digital world where having a well-informed and broad understanding of information systems (IS) and information technology (IT) benefits not only yourself, by being able to utilise IT resources but also the workforce you may encounter.
IT can provide wider positions of careers, leading to valued utilisation in an organisation setting when managing information systems.
1.2 Overview Of Computer-based IS
Computer-based IS allows users to access large amounts of information - granting us the ability to collect, share, organise and store that information.
IS capabilities include:
- precise and fast communication
- performing large amounts of analytical
- quick access to information globally
- interpretation of data
- computerised tasks
Information systems support ranges from the whole organisation to - specific tasks within departments, e.g. HR, accounting + finance and sales.
1.3 How Does IT Impact Organisations?
Positives include:
- Organisations having a more open system
- Eliminating tasks that can affect productivity
- Manger decisions can be more informed and quicker access to date in time-sensitive positions
- Dangerous tasks no longer require people
- New opportunities
Negatives include:
- Possible elimination of jobs that required skills that are now deemed no longer necessary
- Employees may face a lost sense of self.
- Health problems e.g excessive lack of mobility (sitting for tooling), prolonged exposure to screens (eye damage)
1.4 Why are information systems important to society?
From things like robots to as common as phones, information systems have changed the way we can do things, for better or for worse.
Society would be able to see improvements like a better work-life balance, more opportunities for those with disabilities such as vision and speech impairment and other specific implementations such as in the health care system:
- booking can be easier and more efficient
- more precise monitoring of patients
- remote appointments

Quote of the week:
" Innovation - the heart of technological change - is fundamentally a learning process." - Peter Dicken
I like your summary description for 1.1 and how you've used bullet points for the various examples of how IT and IS can be used in 1.2 and it's pros and cons in 1.3. Also the detail about how IT is used to help run all departments of a business (from HR, accounting, ect). That remark highlights how vital technology and Information Systems are in the modern workforce.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea that studying IT and IS is crucial in today's digital age because it empowers individuals to effectively utilize IT resources and contributes to workforce efficiency. IT does have an positive impact on organizations, such as improved decision-making, task automation, and new opportunities, align with the benefits of technological advancement.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I might disagree with one thing. For instance, while IT can eliminate certain tasks and create new opportunities, it can also lead to job displacement and a loss of traditional skills, which it might be a concerning. But overall, I love how you evaluate your points into bullet points which makes it neat and understandable to read. Great Job!
I loved the use of dot-pointing throughout the summary because it really highlights the important take away information.
ReplyDeleteYour blog was organized and easy to read. Discussing and summarizing all the objectives of chapter 1. I learned new key points such as some of the negative impacts of Technology on organizations. I agree with your points of the class discussion and as well as your summary.
ReplyDeleteThe manner that you broke it up and summarised it to make it easier to understand is quite impressive.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your summary. You've kept everything extremely organised with different headings and bullet points which further helps readers to follow along. I also enjoyed the quote of the week at the bottom!
ReplyDeleteGreat Summary Sophie, the way you structure your post makes it very easy to understand and follow along, its beautifully laid out great work!
